What a RACE!

Mood: Excited

Now Listening: "Scotty Doesn't Know"- Lustra

Now Reading: "Shakespeare for Dummies" by John Doyle and Ray Lischner

Long run the queen!

Rags to Riches saved the Belmont, then stole it right out from under Curlin's nose. And the impacts are limitless. First filly to win it in over a hundred years. First filly to win it at the mile-and-a-half distance. First sibling to win (Jazil won last year, making her mom quite the celebrity). First Triple Crown wins for both Todd Pletcher and John Velasquez.

The race of the year, so far! Race of the year! What else to get out of it:

-Seeing Todd Pletcher drop the formal act and jump around screaming like a guy that won a horse race. (He threw it right back on again at the trophy presentation, but still, to see him actually enjoy one of his horse races instead of standing at attention in the stands.)

-Hearing owners actually give a shit about the fans. Rags to Riches's owners actually said that one of the reasons they started talking Pletcher into it was because they knew the public would love it. As opposed to people that retire their horses before they actually get a chance to show what they can do just so they can rush them off to stud (i.e. the sheiks). Speaking of which, the sheiks bought breeding interests in both Street Sense and Hard Spun so don't hold your breath for seeing an older horse career for any of them.

-Also hearing said owners hint that they might try to talk Pletcher into doing this again.

-Hearing the owners say they also want to take a trip upstate to Saratoga.

-The chance that we might finally, FINALLY get some filly coverage!

So, with the Triple Crown over, I anxiously wait to see if Rags comes back for the Travers. I hope so. I want to see her and I know I can get Whitney and Travers days off, but not so sure about the Alabama.

Lady in Waiting

Mood: Happy

Now Listening: *Nothing Right Now*

Now Reading: "The Daily Gazette"- June 6 2007 Saratoga County Edition

Bad news: Street Sense is skipping the Belmont, so we'll have to wait for that rematch.

Good News: Pletcher grew a spine the other day and Kentucky Oaks winner Rags to Riches is coming to take his place. Plus, we have the wild card, Digger, entered by Larry Roman when he heard Street Sense wasn't coming. Not the most promising looking one, but you never know. As of now, Roman has yet to find a rider, but if he could stop trying to call retired jockeys, he might have more luck. Kinf of the eccentric type.

But, Rags to Riches. Finally, we've been waiting for this since May! Long overdue, but better late than never!

Getting Situated Here...

Mood: Happy

Now Listening: "Justice"- Coming Century (from Samurai 7)

Now Reading: "The Daily Gazette"- May 30th 2007 Saratoga County Edition

Well, I passed all my classes the last semester, so that worry's out of the way.

---

Well, it's a week late, but I did see the Preakness, among some other races:

*At first glance, we can sit around and whine about not having a Triple Crown again.

Then, we can realize that there is a reason it's a big deal. It's not supposed to be easy. That's why we haven't seen one in almost thirty years.

Take another look and the three-year-old division got a lot more interesting. And, if all goes well, the Belmont will be the same.

We have the Derby winner Street Sense. We have his rival and Preakness winner, Curlin, who is living up to those good first impressions that led to a three-million-dollar gamble. We have Hard Spun, a front runner with a surprising amount of staying power. Plus, any number of additional surprises. Among them could be Kentucky Oaks winner Rags to Riches, if Pletcher grows a spine. Remember, he could have tried her in the Derby and chickened out. Right now, the strongest three-year-old he has is his filly and he won't let her prove it. Pletcher's a wimp in a sport that is, sadly, full of them.

*The Metropolitan Mile had a field full of interesting horses. Including Corinthian, who went from running like a drunk as a three-year-old to becoming quite the interesting contender now. And....Political Force?! Wow, he's moved up in the world since I last saw him. I remember betting on him as a two-year-old and losing because he made had a tantrum in the starting gate. Now, he's almost winning Grade I races under the guidance of the legendary giant killer Allen Jerkens. Hmmm......giant killer....especially at Saratoga....and if he and Political Force come back...I might have a longshot bet to try this summer, but after that finish, I can't say he'll stay a long shot for much longer.

*I came home from work and flipped the TV on just in time to see my favorite turf horse, The Tin Man, come back and win the Shoemaker Mile. Nice to have the old guy back, they don't build them like him anymore. Not since John Henry, or maybe even Kelso.

---

My work situation might be on it's way to being handled.

When I first put in my summer availability, I pretty much said I could come in anytime, but prefered later shifts. If I don't have to come in till three or four, it gives me more time to try and relax before I go to work. Go the library to use the computer. Get my paper. Get something to eat. Maybe a little quick shopping. If I have something that has to get done, I'll have the time. Having to stay till eleven or midnight is a worthwhile trade-off, especially since the place is open later in the summer and we actually get a lot of late night traffic.

What ended up happening was that I was getting dragged in as early as my availability allowed. Which left me little time to get my paper and get anything in my stomache. Which left me overworked, overheated, starving, and stressed out in the heat of lunchtime. My shifts tended to leave me in an awkward situation in regards to breaks, usually having to be an hour late since nobody was there to cover for me. Even if I was getting out earlier than usual, there is only so much you can do at seven or eight at night, especially when you've been worked into the floor by both lunch and dinner traffic.

So, reluctently but with my sanity at stake, I put in a note asking for the later shifts specifically. Recently, the manager that writes the schedules told me she saw the note and gave me the impression she was taking it seriously. She said she liked me at the shifts because, like I said, they're weird hours and  she needs someone to cover them, but she'd find someone else. Tonight I was hopeful, though, because she was also happy to have someone to handle the late traffic. So, hopefully, I haven't disappointed too many people.

I'm a door mat, I swear. A door mat and a wimp. But, for Christ sake, next year is my last year of college and this will probably be the last real summer vacation I ever get. Might as well get to enjoy it.

---

I've always wanted to go to the Saratoga Gaming and Raceway, the harness track we have here. I went once when I was a kid, with Mom, to see a fireworks display for the Fourth of July. But, that was a while back and the harness track has since undergone a massive remodeling that turned it into a gaming hotspot. Or so I've heard. I haven't actually seen what happened and I'm anxious to go and see what the place is like now.

And a recent invitation in the mail offered an interesting oppertunity.

Thge cousins on my dad's side of the family seem to get married every month or so. We get the periodic inviation, but it's usually in another state or for someone Dad's fighting with at the moment, so we can't go. Consequently, I haven't seen any of these relatives in several years.

But, this time, one of my cousins is having a marriage party of sorts at the "Racino", as it's often called. On the one hand, it wouldn't mind going to a party at a place I was going to visit anyway. On the other hand, I can always go on my own and I imagine they'll get a little aggrivated with me if I show up and spend all my time at the races.

---

After several years, Saratoga has another batch of horse statues scattered all over town. My paticular favorite is one that looks like it's wrapped up in a foil wrap, except for the head and neck, which is painted to look like chocolate...complete with a missing ear!

A Moment of Truth

Mood: Releived/Excited

Now Listening: *Nothing Right Now*

Now Reading: "The Daily Gazette"- May 18, 2007 Saratoga County Edition

Finally, all my tests and all my classes are out of the way. So, for the next several months, I can concentrate on more important things.

The Preakness, for instance.

It's gonna be a matter of pace, by the looks of it. We have Hard Spun, who some handicappers beleive can take it wire-to-wire, if he can recall his Kentucky Derby form. On the other hand, On the other hand, the newcomers, such as fellow front-runner Flying First Class, could push the pace issue. And, last but certianly not least, is Street Sense, Kentucky Derby winner and a powerful closer. A whacky pace could make or break the Triple Crown.

And in the interest of fairness, we'll look at the Black-Eyed Susan.

Keep in mind, there are some racing purists that think this should be the first jewel in the Triple Tiara, with the Kentucky Oaks the first, and the Acorn.

Also, keep in mind, this is a Grade II race. Which is a moderate-minor stakes.

And it's only worth $250,000, as opposed to the Preakness's $1 million dollar purse.

And it doesn't attract much. Aside from finally figuring out where Panty Raid went off to, I don't exactly see a field full of potential stars.

And I find it dissapointing that Panty Raid is here and hope she comes back to New York for the real Triple Tiara: The Acorn, the Mother Goose, and the Coaching Club American Oaks. A set of races with real value and real prestige that has been taken by the likes of the immortal Ruffian. And I sincierely hope this will have her beating a path back to Saratoga, where I will certianly be happy to finally get a look at her.

Just remember, racing purists: They're horses. Don't impose your gender bullshit on a bunch of horses. Pay the ladies what they're worth.

---

I realized something I love about spring and summer.

I love seeing all the green come back. It's nice to walk back to my car on campus and see the trees with all their leaves again. And seeing all the flowers coming back is nice, too.

And the ice cream stands.

And the chance to go out without sleeves. I can't explain why, but it's nice to go without the sleeves and get a little freedom.

What a Race!

Mood: Relaxed

Now Listening: "Justice"- Coming Century

Now Reading: "The Daily Gazette"- May 10 2007 Saratoga County Edition

Finally had my last day of classes on Tuesday. Which means I still have to go back for tests next week, but most of the pressure is finally off. No more reports and no more readings until fall. I can usually wing through the tests pretty well.

I'm a little pissed off, though. I payed over three-hundred dollars for all my books and I got a grand total of fifty-five back.

---

The Juvinlle Jinx is officially over. And boy did we get a show on it's way out the door.

Street Sense come from next to last, winning the Kentucky Derby by two-and-a-half lengths. However, Hard Spun needs to get some credit here, he hung in there right until the last furlong. And he's coming back for the Preakness, a shorter race, so he still demands attention. The rest of the field, I'm not so sure. But, I'm looking forward to a rematch next Saturday.

---

This summer is just gonna kill my diet. As it is, all the stress from finals time has been killing my diet and now that that's over, I'm gonna have problems this summer.

McDonald's is going all out for the new Shrek movie, which means new desserts: a mint chocolate shake and a new McFlurry with green M&Ms and brownies. This on top of all the ice cream places that open up in the summer.

Diets suck, there's just no other word for it.
